As Principal of King Edward VI College, I extend a very warm welcome to you all. In June I spoke to you about new beginnings and now, you will begin to forge new relationships with your fellow students and members of the college staff.
In September we began a wonderful adventure together – and this adventure will take you on an exciting journey for the next two years at this College. For you, the beginning is a new, exciting chapter in your lives as you embark upon your A Level studies. For me, it is my third year as Principal. Like you, I will face challenges, some difficult and some rewarding. Like you, I may have moments when I take pride in my achievements and, also like you, there will be times when I will have a crisis of confidence and wonder if I am up to the job.
I want to address these thoughts of self doubt and ask that you remember this when you need reassurance.
You are here because we believe in YOUR potential. So now you need to invest in yourself, and what better investment could there be? Only you can do it. And I need to stress this: you will need to make an effort – the emphasis at college is on helping you to work and learn independently, in preparation for going on to university and into a job. There will be plenty of help along the way. Be proactive and seek help and support when you need it.
So, you have a new start. You will meet new people; you’ll make new friends and I encourage you to get involved in all aspects of college life. Make the most of every opportunity so that you can continue to grow and develop – so that you can reach the great potential, I see in you today.
‘The most important thing in life is to stop saying ‘I wish’ and to start saying ‘I will’. Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities.’
-Charles Dickens, from his novel, David Copperfield
