Academic lessons and additional support
When you enrol at college you will meet with an expert adviser to ensure that your programme of study gives you the best possible preparation for your chosen career or university. You will normally receive four lessons a week in each of your chosen subjects plus a programme of English support, personalised to your abilities and chosen subjects.
In addition, to help develop your knowledge of each subject, you will have weekly access to Subject Tutors to discuss work covered through a structured programme of workshops and review meetings with your tutors. You will also meet regularly with your Personal Tutor, who will closely monitor your progress, be available to offer advice and support and help you apply to your chosen universities during your second year at college.
All students are encouraged to enrol on additional courses to learn a new skill, relax with a new hobby, or enjoy participating in the large variety of musical or sporting opportunities the college offers. You can meet friends in a book club, exercise in the gym, or perhaps learn a new language. From computer programming to global politics; whatever your interest, we try to offer an activity to satisfy it.
English Language Support
All of our international students receive an individual assessment of their language needs once at college. Our English Language Specialist will work with you to agree a personalised programme of support based upon your current English skills and the subjects you have chosen to study. We will also help you to prepare for your IELTS exam to support your application to university.
Clubs & Societies
King Edward’s offers students over 40 different extracurricular clubs, each with the chance to learn new skills, make new friends and benefit from new experiences. If you've a passion for a particular activity, from Manga Art to poetry reading, there’s either a club for you to join or an opportunity for you to create one.
Parents are able to track the progress of their sons and daughters using the parental area of our website called 'Parent Portal'. Each parent will receive a secure code, providing access to the attendance data. They can also read tutor comments on effort and achievement for each subject taken. Portal data is updated every hour as registers are taken in every lesson. In addition, all parents receive regular formal updates on student progress at college, starting with a "settling in" report at the start of October.
Appointing a Guardian
Moving to another country to study provides you with fascinating and exciting opportunities, as well as some challenges.
The college provides outstanding support for students outside the classroom, including their Personal Tutor, an experienced Lead Tutor, student buddies, and a caring host family. In addition we recommend you consider appointing a qualified 'Guardian' who will be available in the UK to help and support you.
A good guardian will talk to students and parents regularly, is always available to help guide and support you, and will support you in emergency situations such as flight delays or health problems. Your appointed guardian would also receive your academic reports, have access to your college attendance record, and would be the person who would give authorisation for you to go on college trips or organised weekend visits to other parts of the UK.
Below are a few of the guardianship companies operating in the UK you might like to consider. If you decide to appoint a guardian please remember to (i) confirm their details with the college and (ii) only appoint a guardian who is a member of AEGIS (The Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students). AEGIS checks all members to ensure their service helps ‘To promote the safety, welfare and education in the United Kingdom of International Students aged 18 or under’. A statement we completely support and work to help achieve.
When deciding which guardianship company to appoint we recommend you consider the following points.
