About this course FAQs An introduction to Physics Pathways Information

What is Physics?

Physics involves the study of the universe. It is essential to our understanding of the world around us and challenges our imaginations with concepts like relativity and quantum mechanics.

What will I study?

The course content is split into six modules:

  • Module one is development of practical skills
  • Module two covers the foundations of Physics
  • Module three focuses on forces and motion
  • Module four studies electrons, waves and photons

In year 13 students’ complete module five which is the Newtonian world and astrophysics along with module six which is particles and medical physics. Lessons will incorporate an extensive range of experimental work to enhance the learning experience.

Assessments

Your final grade will be based on three exams at the end of year 13:

Modelling Physics: 100 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes written paper, 37% of total A level

Exploring Physics: 100 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes written paper, 37% of total A level

Unified Physics: 70 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes written paper, 26% of total A level

A level Practical Endorsement in physics  (non-exam assessment). Reported separately as Pass or Fail and will not contribute towards your final grade.

Trips, visits and enrichments:

  • Physics Olympiad competition opportunities
  • Support for the physics aptitude test for applicants to Oxford University
  • Regular guest speakers

What can it lead to?

A-level Physics opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates can pursue higher education in Physics or related fields, leading to careers in research, academia, engineering, or technology. Additionally, A-level Physics provides a solid foundation for careers in areas such as medicine, environmental science, data analysis, and finance, where problem-solving and analytical skills are highly valued.

FAQs

Do you need to study A level Mathematics to study A level Physics?
While studying A-level Mathematics is not a requirement to take A-level Physics, it is highly recommended. A strong foundation in mathematics is essential for understanding and applying the mathematical concepts and equations involved in physics. However, for students not studying A level Mathematics there is a Maths for Physics course run by the College to support your studies. Furthermore, many universities and higher education institutions prefer applicants who have studied both A-level Mathematics and A-level Physics when considering admissions for physics or engineering-related courses. It is worth checking the specific requirements and recommendations of the universities or colleges you are interested in to ensure you will meet their criteria.
What are the benefits of studying A-level Physics?
Studying A-level Physics can provide numerous benefits. It develops analytical and problem-solving skills, enhances mathematical abilities, and nurtures a scientific mindset. A-level Physics is highly regarded by universities and employers, as it demonstrates a strong foundation in the sciences and can open doors to various career paths, including engineering, research, and technology-related fields.
Will I get a textbook?
You will get an online textbook and a paper resources booklet for each topic with structured notes, lesson materials and past paper questions.
