I pay tribute to Alan Cutler (MBE) who sadly passed away on 17 May 2020.
Alan was a former pupil of the grammar school and turned his steadfast devotion to the College into action through his service as a member of the Board of Governors and, more recently, as Chair of the Foundation Trustees. Alan was also a very active member of the Stourbridge Old Edwardian Club, serving as both Committee Member and Past President. Alan will long be remembered at the Club as the ‘master vintner’, for his expertise in selecting and managing the Club’s collection of fine wines.
Alan had a passion for the history of our College and would often recount tales of King Edward VI School – the grammar school on this site before the establishment of the sixth form college in 1976. Alan was keen to help preserve the history of the College. Every November, Alan led the tributes to those who served in World War I and World War II on the occasion of our Service of Remembrance. Alan carefully prepared a showcase of the stories of those former pupils and members of staff who served, helping us to understand and to commemorate their history and ours. In his own life, Alan modelled the importance of life-long learning and community service. We were delighted when he received a MBE award for his voluntary service to geological conservation.
We are grateful for his life and his service to the College. We will remember him with great affection and we will miss him.
