Course overview

What is applied science?

Applied Science is the study of Biology, Chemistry and Physics but with a greater focus on how skills in each are used and applied in various real-world scenarios, job sectors and industries. The Level 3 Extended Certificate BTEC in Applied Science is the equivalent of a full A level and offers students the chance to study the sciences in equivalent detail and complexity as an A level programme. Students have the opportunity to tailor knowledge to prospective future technical careers and will be assessed in a range of different ways.

What Will I Study?

You will study four Units throughout this course. Unit 1 - Principles of Science will cover content from A levels in all three science subjects. Unit 2 - Scientific Procedures will assess practical and experimental techniques. Unit 3 - Investigation Skills will assess your ability to plan and carry out a scientific investigation. Unit 4 - Optional Unit can be chosen from a range of units across the sciences. You will be assessed via both coursework and exam.

Trips, Visits and Enrichment

This is an exciting new course being launched in September 2021. The college will make contact with various universities, local and national career providers and national organisations such as the NHS to provide students with real-world and hands on advice, experience and contacts.

What Could it Lead To?

The Level 3 Extended Certificate BTEC in Applied Science is equivalent in size to one A level and would be studied alongside two other A levels. Students studying this course would be able to progress on to a range of higher education courses at University, including both undergraduate and foundation level degrees. Additionally, students may move on to take further professional qualifications in a specific career with the possibility to move directly to employment.
