Could you help support King Edward VI College by becoming a parent governor?

The Local Governing body (LGB) has vacancies for two parent governors to join them for a period of 2 years effective from 1 January 2023.

King Edward VI College (the college) became an academy within the Heart of Mercia Academy Trust in 2021 along with Hereford Sixth Form College and Worcester Sixth Form College.   The Trust governance structure and its aims and responsibilities are detailed in its governance procedures.  Local Governing Bodies (LGBs) are effectively committees of the Trust Board.  Their responsibilities cover strategy and leadership, education and curriculum issues, financial and resource issues as detailed in the Trust scheme of delegation.

The essential qualities required to be a parent governor are an interest in the education of young people aged 16-19 and the ability and willingness to attend at least seven formal meetings per year.  The formal meetings of the Local Governing body are currently held on Wednesday afternoons from 6.00pm – 8.00 pm.

A previous parent governor’s feedback was:

“It was certainly an interesting initial few meetings – not least getting to grips with all of the acronyms as well as witnessing the energy, commitment and ability of the College Leadership team. The position is, essentially, a non-executive directorship.  We’re here to listen, question and advise – operational matters are not our concern. That said, we are involved in some of the key strategic decisions the college makes – and there are many – and that makes for a stimulating and challenging but ultimately rewarding experience. I would recommend the position as well worth applying for. I have learned a great deal about governance and the stresses and strains of running a large FE college, that is first and foremost a superb educational establishment but also a business that is adapting to modern day requirements.”

The closing date for nominations is 12 noon on Thursday 24 November 2022.

This information, including the rules and procedures and a nomination form, have been distributed to all parents via ParentMail, however, if you would like to find out more, please contact Annie Meyler at ann.meyler@kedst.ac.uk
