At our college, we are proud to support students in making a difference through community service, both locally and globally. Through our Roy Award and Community Service Award, students are empowered to take on impactful projects that create lasting change in communities across the world.
Each year, students apply for these prestigious grants, presenting their vision for meaningful service. Whether it’s supporting healthcare abroad, aiding education initiatives, or tackling food insecurity, the awards provide funding to turn compassion into action.
Last year, two recipients undertook transformative service experiences. One student spent two weeks volunteering in Ghana, using her bursary to teach local students, provide essential supplies, and immerse herself in a vibrant community. Her experience strengthened her understanding of global education and community support. Another recipient, Abdullahi, used his Roy Award bursary to complete a medical internship in Peru, where he observed advanced medical techniques, practiced CPR, suturing, and blood drawing, and learned critical response strategies for polytrauma patients. His experience deepened his understanding of healthcare disparities, witnessing firsthand the challenges of accessing essential medical care. He also strengthened his Spanish skills, allowing him to better connect with patients and families. Outside of his work, he built lasting friendships with fellow volunteers from around the world, and visiting Machu Picchu provided a memorable highlight amidst his impactful service.
This year’s award winners are set to continue the legacy of service:
- Izzy will work in marine conservation and English teaching in partnership with Mighty Roar.
- Nadine will support food preparation and distribution efforts in Lisbon through International Volunteer HQ.
- John will aid meal distribution for those in need through Miami Valley Meals.
These students exemplify the values of dedication, generosity, and global citizenship, and we look forward to seeing the incredible impact of their projects.
For students interested in applying, details will be shared in their first year. The opportunity to make a difference is just a grant away!
