Additional qualifications

At college, students have the opportunity to enhance their academic journey by pursuing a variety of additional qualifications. These programs are designed to complement a students main course of study and provide valuable skills and knowledge. Some of these qualifications also offer UCAS points, which can be advantageous for university applications. Additionally, all of them will enhance a student’s CV.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The EPQ is a project-based qualification, you can take on something you are passionate about or it can be linked to something you are studying. The course carries a maximum of 28 UCAS points. The submission could be either a report, essay, creative artefact or an event or performance. You will agree on your area of study in year 12 and undertake most of the work in year 13.

Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths)

This one-year qualification builds on your GCSE maths knowledge, focusing on developing problem-solving skills and enhancing your ability to communicate mathematical ideas in areas such as statistics, finance, and estimation. The course carries a maximum of 20 UCAS points and requires a minimum of a GCSE grade 5 in maths for entry.

Level 2 Qualification in Community Sports Leadership

Level 2 course (The awarding body is the Leadership skills foundation)

Why get involved: 

  • The qualification equips young people with employability and transferable skills such as motivation, communication, teamwork and problem solving.
  • Leadership volunteering is a vital part of the course, and this allows young people to practice and build their skills to help them in employment and education.
  • It is sport related, but you don’t need any sporting knowledge to take part in the course.

What is covered on the course; 

During the first few weeks, different approaches to coaching are introduced in terms of styles, and roles and responsibilities.

Students are then provided with the opportunities to lead basic physical activities with other students in the community

To prepare for the sessions students are required to plan lead and evaluate the physical activities that they lead in local primary schools

Finally completion of a log book of information is required

Additional Work

  • Each student is required to undertake additional coaching in their own time of around 10 hours
  • Encouraged to find your own sports club
  • A witness at the club will need to observe and sign off the coaching hours

One morning a week – depending on timetabling

Level 3 Environmental Leadership: Leading a Project for Positive Change

The Environment Leadership Programme is a course run by the Leadership Skills Foundation, in collaboration with the WWF and the RSPB. It is run through our Enrichment programme.

This course is for anyone with a passion for the environment, conservation, protecting our natural world and wanting to make a real difference.

It presents an exciting new opportunity, a recognised qualification worth 8 UCAS points. By participating in this program, you’ll refine your leadership abilities through planning and executing a project of your choosing, aimed at improving either our local natural or urban environment.

The course runs from October until June. Over this period, you’ll complete a series of small assignment tasks, providing evidence of various aspects of your chosen project, whilst receiving guidance from college staff.

In achieving this qualification you will demonstrate your passion for the natural world beyond your studies, highlight your organisational and leadership skills, and serve as a strong addition to any personal statement or future application.

With limited places available for only 15 students, you’ll receive personalised support from college staff in the Biology and Geography departments.

  • Run in collaboration with the WWF, the RSPB and the Leadership Skills Foundation
  • Worth 8 UCAS points
  • Students work in groups to plan, carry out and evaluate the impact of a project of their choosing which will have a positive impact on the natural world
  • Students have to submit a series of tasks organised in to units on which they are assessed. They also have to collect data on their project and present their project findings
  • Graded as Pass/Fail
